Protection against DDoS attacks (opens in a new tab) The DDoS-Guard provider followed Cloudflare in ending its services for the controversial Kiwi Farms forum.
After analyzing the site’s content, known to troll marginalized social groups, DDoS-Guard banned the site from using its DDoS protection service.
Kiwi Farms forum administrators activated DDoS-Guard protection for their domain on September 4, 2022, after Cloudflare’s decision to block the forum (opens in a new tab) and revoke the right to use security services.
Kiwi farms are struggling to stay online
The forum recently managed to get back online for a while, using a Chinese-administered domain protected by Vancouver security hosting (opens in a new tab) VanwaTech supplier.
The company has a history of helping controversial websites like 8kun (formally known as 8chan) and the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer. Both sites have been blocked by Cloudflare in the past.
Nick Lim, VanwaTech founder and CEO said TechRadar Pro that the company is firmly committed to its role as a neutral internet service provider, not an internet censor.
“We don’t provide registration, hosting or domain registration services for Kiwi farms – they just use our content delivery network to protect their site from cyber attacks like any other customer,” he added.
When trying to visit the Kiwi Farms forum, the site appears to be blocked with the message: “Sorry, kiwifarms.ru has been blocked by the network administrator”.
Despite the controversy, there is more discussion about a permanent solution for these types of sites, especially for keeping trolling sites offline.
DDoS-Guard says that while it was not the company’s responsibility to moderate content on pages using its services, it did not wait for an official notification before Kiwi Farms closed access to its security service.
“We don’t have to decide if a website violates the law. We may only restrict access to the customer’s website if it is justified. For example, if there is an official notice from the court, “said the company in blog post (opens in a new tab).
“We have received many complaints from users claiming that they are violating DDoS Guard’s acceptable use policy.”
DDoS-Guard thanked those who took notice of the incident.
